Introduction

Sania Mirza is an Indian professional tennis player. A former doubles world No. 1, she has won six major titles – three in women’s doubles and three in mixed doubles. From 2003 until her retirement from singles in 2013, she was ranked by the Women’s Tennis Association as the Indian No. 1 in singles. In 2003, Mirza became the first Asian player to win a Grand Slam title by winning the Australian Open. She also won Wimbledon four times (2005-2007) and French Open twice (2005-2006). In total Mirza reached six finals at Grand Slams events: two at Wimbledon (2003 – 2004), two at Australian Open (2003 – 2005) and two at US Open (2002 – 2003).

Early life

Sania Mirza is a woman who has overcome many obstacles in her life, and it’s no surprise that she did so. Her parents were both tennis players who moved from Hyderabad, India to Mumbai when she was five years old. She began playing at the age of seven and won her first tournament at eight years old!

She went on to become a professional tennis player in 1998, which is when she first met Mahesh Bhupathi. They married in 2003 after getting engaged shortly after their first meeting—but they didn’t last long before divorcing less than two years later due to incompatibility issues between them (Mahesh had been married before; Sania hadn’t).

Playing career

Sania Mirza has won six major titles – three in women’s doubles and three in mixed doubles. She has also won three Grand Slams – two mixed doubles and one women’s doubles.

She has won 21 WTA Tour titles, including eight Grand Slam singles tournaments (three at Roland Garros, two at Wimbledon and three at US Open), five WTA Premier 5 Series tournaments (the season-ending event held each year), four WTA International Series Gold medal events (held during the Australian summer), two Fed Cup finals appearances for India with a win against Netherlands in 2009 and loss against England in 2010;[9] she also reached the final of 2007 US Open Women’s Doubles Championship along with Martina Hingis.[10][11]

2008: First WTA singles title

Sania Mirza’s first WTA singles title came in 2008 when she won the Bangalore Open. She beat fellow Indian Shikha Uberoi in the final. The win was Sania’s first WTA singles title and her first Grand Slam tournament championship.

2011-2012: Return to singles and injury

In 2011, Mirja returned to singles. She won the French Open mixed doubles title with Max Mirnyi and reached the semifinals of the Australian Open women’s doubles with compatriot Anabel Medina Garrigues.

In 2012, she was injured and missed most of the year. She returned in 2013 but retired from professional tennis at Wimbledon due to a wrist injury.[2]

2013-2014: Return to doubles and Grand Slams

In 2013 and 2014, Sania Mirza won the Australian Open women’s doubles title with Cara Black. She also reached the finals of Wimbledon that year but lost to Laura Robson and Mark Philippoussis.

In 2014, she won her first Grand Slam tournament by winning both mixed doubles titles at French Open partnering Bruno Soares – becoming only one player to win two Grand Slams in this format along with Lindsay Davenport (4).

2015-2016

In 2015, Mirja reached the semifinals of the Australian Open, French Open and US Open. She also won the Australian Open doubles title with Martina Hingis and the Wimbledon mixed doubles title with Henri Kontinen.

In 2016 she won her first Grand Slam title at Wimbledon when she beat Eugenie Bouchard in three sets to win her first ever Grand Slam singles title. She went on to win two more major titles that year: one was in Paris; this time she partnered with Serena Williams but lost in straight sets despite hitting 14 aces (most by any player since 2002). The other was at Flushing Meadows where she teamed up with Venus Williams once again but lost again against Garbine Muguruza after winning their opening match easily 6–2 5–7 4–6 4–6 6–1 6–1 5-4 7-5 8-10 12-10 13-11 15 points each.”
